Satellites Operating in Brazil

ANATEL is the agency responsible for issuing the authorisation for using satellite communications inside Brazilian territory. In this article, we will list the satellites authorised by ANATEL to serve Brazil.
The authorisation for using satellites in Brazilian territory, both national and foreign, is issued by ANATEL, which has a few requirements, especially regarding the frequency bandwidth and signal properties.
Any company or entity that might be interested in using a Brazilian satellite must be constituted according to Brazilian laws, with offices and management in the country. As long as it is valid, the authorisation is provided as a title of responsibility for the owner, which means that the operation must be entirely managed by them.
ANATEL regulates the use of the bands Ku and Ka in any satellite covering the national territory through specific directives. The Ku band satellites must operate in the frequency bandwidths of 10.95 to 11.20 GHz, 11.45 to 12.20 GHz and 13.75 to 14.5 GHz. The Ka band must operate in the frequency bandwidths of 27 to 30 GHz, and 17.7 to 20.2 GHz.
The satellites usually have global coverage, and due to their positioning in orbit they tend to service Europe, Africa and the Americas. All the satellites specified in the tables below have full coverage of the national territory, unless specified.
The GPS system is a global system which operates through North-American regulations, and it is authorised to provide location services worldwide by agreements and specific directives from ITU, the International Telecommunication Union.
Authorised Satellites for Operating in Brazil
ANATEL has on their website a list of the satellites authorised for operation, including their specific licenses published by the agency. The agency has also issued authorisation for several satellites which are still to be launched, most of them without an expected start date. Below, we have listed the satellites that have already launched and are operational, including their main features.
